These days we are bombarded with home improvement programmes, encouraging us to style our homes and advising us on colours and techniques. Sometimes you learn something from these programmes and other times you can’t believe how they got away with the designs.
However, there is one programme that always entertains and inspires and even brings tears to your eyes and that is DIY SOS. Most people are familiar with this programme, where a family who have experienced really difficult times and have been unable to finish off building work they have started, are nominated by a friend or family member and the DIY SOS team go in and design the interiors and finish off the building work. The local community all pull together and the deserving family are presented with a beautiful home.
This year, Custom World are proud to be celebrating their 30th Anniversary and would like to share their success with the communities that have supported us over the years. There are many unsung heroes who deserve awards and many people who have faced difficult times in their lives and deserve a treat. So we are asking people to nominate family members or friends who they think deserve a special thank you.
To nominate that special person who lives in Dorset, Hampshire or Wiltshire, all you have to do is write a short letter or email telling us why this person deserves a room make-over. A specially selected panel will read through the nominations, and one lucky person will receive a fitted bedroom or home office furniture for up to the value of £3000.00. They will have a free design consultation with one of our professional design team, their furniture will then be manufactured at our local workshop and then our in-house fitters will install their furniture to the highest standard absolutely free.

Before I became involved in the world of fitted furniture, I moved into a house with fitted wardrobes and units in one of the bedrooms. There was a place for everything and all my clothes and shoes were easily accessible.
In two other bedrooms, I had freestanding furniture that had been brought along from my previous house and I was constantly frustrated by the lack of storage in them and the fact that the doors never closed properly if you put a thicker garment on a hanger.
I always wished that I could have fitted furniture in the other rooms, but for some reason I had convinced myself that fitted furniture was expensive and out of my budget. I couldn’t have been more wrong!

The problem with flat pack furniture drawers
The problem with flat pack furniture drawers is…
Solid drawer unit construction for fitted furniture, i.e. non flat pack furniture
Many of us have purchased flat packed furniture before, whether as a student or later in life to save a bit of money on furnishing our home. Flat pack bedroom furniture has its place and is of course very cheap and requires your time to put it together, as it arrives in pieces, but there are a few problems with flat packed furniture…one of which is the drawer construction.
The drawer units of flat pack furniture have a very flimsy bottom, usually made of very thin board, which is slid into two groves in between the two sides of the drawer unit. The drawer unit itself is not exactly of a strong construction either and in most cases is made of one piece of thin board, which is wrapped around at the two corners and then held together with the drawer front.

Inevitably, as the drawer gets used and your ‘stuff’ builds up, be it clothes storage or other items within the drawer, the drawer unit collapses and the bottom will fall out. The drawer unit becomes difficult to pull out, as the runners are in many cases slots on either side of the drawer and the miss-shaped drawer becomes difficult to manipulate.
There is a solution to the flat packed drawer problem, and that is to purchase made to measure furniture, but not from all fitted furniture suppliers, as some of these use a similar construction to the one described above. The drawer units that Custom World make are of a solid construction so the above problems will never occur. Also, each drawer has separate drawer runners, which can be either conventional close or soft close drawers, so the opening and closing of the drawer is always smooth.
We have had customers come back to us after many years of use and tell us that the drawers are still ‘as good as new’.
Fitted furniture might be more expensive than flat pack furniture, but it is surprisingly more affordable than you might think, but one this is for sure it will outlast any flat pack furniture available on the market…therefore you are getting what you pay for and that is lasting quality. On top of that, fitted furniture provides you with up to 50% more storage space than the flat pack alternative.
